The baby is the developer.
We often hear that it grew in the womb, it reproduces by its appearance all stages of the evolution of life, from unicellular to little monkey through the crustacean, fish, amphibian, reptile, mammal undifferentiated.
It is seen clearly in photos by Lennart Nilsson, This tiny sponge cells, tadpole, the lobster, turning gradually in small astronaut floating in darkness evoking the sky, attached by cord to his ship, diver lost in the deep and light-filled stew, red, pink, orange . It exudes such a sense of vastness, of solitude, we almost forget his mother, whom he sees yet each heart beat, every breath, every rumbling. He can hear the voice of his father, feeling his hands and answer his call touch moving and can also attract by shining the beam of a flashlight on the belly of the mother. He is not alone: he is with her, and she, in the world.
Recent research in neurology say that during the first two years of his life, besides food, warmth and protection, the child needs only physical contact with a relative that his brain is developing properly. No "stimulus" special. No toys. No "socialization." The crying baby would in fact an evolutionary mechanism to get him the contact as quickly as possible. It is conceivable interactions between mother and infant as a magnifying glass: crying, response, security, crying, response, security. It seems that the way to respond to the tear is less in this dynamic nature of the response. It is argued that even the famous colic, otherwise unknown in many regions of the world, result from a failure of this microscope: the mechanism jammed, the two sides close to the statement.
A study there are already several decades with infant monkeys made an eloquent demonstration of this need to contact small primates. The monkeys separated at birth from their mothers, were placed in cages containing two maternal figures: one metal and wood, equipped with nipples providing milk, the other with fur, equipped with a heating radiator . To the amazement of the researchers, the baby monkeys preferred the "mommy" soft, warm and spent their days huddled against her and only took the minimum time to drink with each other, so we thought at the time that attachment was primarily motivated by food. The images are of the sentence: the little critters clinging to the figure of the false hair and round eyes drawn. It seems that children learn to touch, even to love first.
And it makes sense when one considers the real speed of evolution: mineral rate, more than a millennium. It is for anthropologists the concept of "environment of evolutionary adaptation", or space-time that certain features of a living organism have been selected as most favorable to the survival of the species. With regard to humans, this environment is called the Neolithic and precedes the process of "civilization" and settlement that we had there a couple of thousand years.
I'm getting this: the baby is telling, because it happens in this world of cities and machines, which we adults have become accustomed, that we assume (obviously), like it or think crappy (or both) but her expectations, a hunter-gatherer brain. We, too, for that matter. But let the baby arrives so that we jump we jump to the eyes, our world, after all, if this should occur.
